Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of Yoga?

Yoga builds strength, improves flexibility and posture, increases the feeling of both physical and mental wellbeing, brings calmness and builds confidence; as well as being enjoyable.

What is the Iyengar Yoga method and how is it different from other styles of yoga?

The Iyengar method of yoga is named after Yogacharya Sri BKS Iyengar who at more than 90 years old has spent his life dedicated to teaching yoga.

Iyengar yoga emphasises the correct alignment of the body in postures, ensuring safety with maximum benefit to flexibility, strength and wellbeing.

What can I expect at a class?

Classes generally start with simple stretching and gradually move towards more advanced poses, ending with a period of relaxation, sometimes incorporating breathing techniques.

Props, such as blocks and belts, are used to help those with less strength or flexibility to work correctly.

Can anyone practise yoga?

Yes – men and women of all ages and fitness can practice yoga. Iyengar yoga teachers are trained to teach various abilities, providing guidance in postures where there are difficulties and giving alternative methods if appropriate.

Currently all classes are unsuitable for pregnant ladies, as this requires specific guidance.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes should be worn to class, such as t-shirt with leggings or shorts. Yoga is practised in bare feet.

Is it ok to eat before class?

Ideally you should leave 1-2 hours after a light snack before attending class, and 3-4 hours after a main meal. You should avoid drinking water during a class.

Is there anything else I should know before I attend a class?

Please let your teacher know of any medical conditions or injuries before you start a class, or if anything has changed since attending your last class.

You should bring a sticky yoga mat, blanket and any other yoga equipment you have along to class.

If you are menstruating certain postures are not suitable, so please let your teacher know.
